ATTENTION: SPORTS/MOTORSPORTS By: Bert Lehman Anvelink dominates WISSOTA Late Model field at Shawano Speedway Shawano, WI (June 13, 2009) - Nick Anvelink was back in victory lane Saturday at Shawano Speedway, winning his third WISSOTA Late Model feature of the year. David Diemel survived the carnage in the IMCA Modified feature and took home his first feature win of the year. John Heinz won his fourth IMCA Stock Car feature, while Chad Guyette won his first ever IMCA Sport Mod feature at the speedway. A.J. Diemel also returned to victory lane, winning his third Fastrak Late Model feature. Nick Anvelink moved into the lead on the first lap of the WISSOTA Late Model feature with Mark Mitchell, Tom Naeyaert, Craig Bartz and M.J. McBride following. A.J. Diemel joined the top five on the second lap, with McBride moving to third. Anvelink began pulling away over the next several laps as Diemel was making his way through the top five. Six laps into the race Diemel passed Mitchell for the runner-up spot, and set his sights on Anvelink who had built himself a comfortable lead. While the top two cars raced away from the field, McBride and Bartz were engaged in a side-by-side battle fourth. Bartz won out on that battle. But as the laps ticked away, Anvelink maintained his lead and Diemel pulled away from third which was taken over by Terry Anvelink with five laps remaining. It was all Nick Anvelink as he cruised to the win over Diemel, Terry Anvelink, Chris Oertel and Mitchell. An opening lap wreck on the frontstretch involving half the IMCA Modified field brought out the red flag. Of the 22 cars that started the race, only 11 were able to continue when the race was restarted. Jesse Peebles jumped out to the quick lead with Mike Knapp, David Diemel, Jerry Muenster and Eddie Muenster following. Diemel worked his way to the lead on lap four, while Eddie Muenster was also making his way to the front. With Diemel pulling out to a slight lead Brad Rohloff and Jared Siefert joined the top five. A caution midway through the race slowed the action. Diemel continued to lead on the restart, with Rohloff moving to second. Rohloff dogged Diemel for the next several laps pressuring for the lead. Rohloff increased the pressure over the final two laps of the race, but Diemel was up to the challenge and went on to win the feature. He was followed by Rohloff, Eddie Muenster, Siefert and Kyle Lentz. A couple of cautions slowed the action over the first four laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature. Shawn Wagner continued to lead when the race was restarted on lap five, with John Heinz, Rod Snellenberger, Greg Gutt and Dan Michonski following. Heinz ducked to the inside of Wagner two laps later to take the lead. Snellenberger also got by Wagner two laps later. Wagner battled back over the next few laps, as he and Snellenberger swapped the second spot several times before Snellenberger secured the position. A caution with two laps remaining bunched up the field. Wagner pulled alongside Heinz on the restart for the lead, but Heinz was able to hang on to the top spot and take the win over Wagner, Snellenberger, Larry Karcz Jr. and Michonski. In the Fastrak Late Model feature, Joe Reuter grabbed the early lead over Jeff Wickersheim, Aaron Wickersheim, Mike Stangl and Dave Fieber. On lap four Jeff Wickersheim, Stangl and Fieber raced three-wide down the backstretch. There was contact, forcing Wickersheim into the wall, as well causing lots of damage to Fieber’s car. Reuter maintained his lead on the restart with A.J. Diemel, Brett Swedberg, Justin Hirt and Stangl following. Hirt grabbed the third spot one lap later as Diemel tracked down Reuter. Midway through the race Diemel used an outside pass to move into the top spot. Once in the lead Diemel pulled out to a comfortable lead and cruised to the win. He was followed by Reuter, Hirt, Swedberg and Stangl. The IMCA Sport Mod feature got off to a slow start with a couple of cautions slowing the action. When the race was restarted Chad Guyette took the early lead with Johnny Whitman, Aaron Holiday, Chad Nelson and Travis Van Straten following. Nelson moved to third on the fourth lap. With the race at its time limit Guyette took the white flag with Whitman in close pursuit. Whitman drove to the inside of Guyette on the last lap and pulled into the lead. Whitman crossed the finish line one car length ahead of Guyette. Officials ruled Whitman jumped one of the restarts and was docked two positions. This gave the win to Guyette, his first at the speedway. Van Straten, Whitman, Holiday and Nelson rounded out the top five. Racing action continues Saturday, June 20 with racing getting underway at 6 p.m. For more information about Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net.
